My Boreas 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
well, i made the jump today (well, yesterday actually) -- i purchased (ordered) my Boreas MTEC/Silverstone case!! i have been looking across the web lately and was thinking about taking the "plunge" into water cooling when i ran across this guy. i had first seen its little brother, the freezone elite, but thought it was not enough cooling -- and much more so given its high cost comparitively. and, even though this guy is DOUBLE the cost, its cooling ability combined with the fact that it comes with its own custom case is what sold me.

so here is what i am looking to cool: i7 965 (currently OCed to 3.8 on air @70+C -- can i hit 4.2?? i think so!!) and 2x gtx 285's factory clocked to 700 MHz (looking for 750-800 for gaming at 1920x1080, but not as important as CPU clocks as i do a LOT of video transcoding)

the three of these guys run HOT!! (as most of you probably already know) because of this, i still don't think the MTEC can dissipate that much heat. so i will be adding 3 black ice 240 extreme rad's - one following each component and another pump/res to try to keep temps low enough that the MTEC can do it's thang. i got Swiftech gpu blocks and a NB block for the Asus P6T chipset. i also stayed with the neoprene 1/4" all-around (against my better judgement) note: 3 rads will be cooled by 6x Noctua NF-P12 fans (still looking for 3rd location????)

the chain will go MTEC -> CPU -> chipset -> rad1 -> pump2 -> GPU1 -> rad2 -> GPU2 -> rad3 -> MTEC

i am HOPING that 3x 240 rads and the MTEC *should* be more than enough to dissipate the massive amounts of heat that OCing these components will produce. yes? no? thoughts?

other thoughts:

i will be running SSD's (1 SSL for OS/apps and 2 MSL for raid 0 gaming) so i plan on removing the HHD cages and putting 1 (2??) radiator there and 1 at the top/rear, but i still need a location for the 3rd -- thinking i can put 2 where the HHD cages were, but still working out the air flow - might be more detrimental than benificial -> another alternative would be to replace the last rad with a 360 and hang it off the back of the case, but i really want to keep everything contained within if possible.

pump2 location: what would be the best place in the chain to put the second pump? do pumps have a temperature requirement/limitation to run properly?? also, i doubt the 2 pumps have the same flow rate - will this be an issue?? should i replace the "stock" CoolIT pump with the identical pump that i purchased?

water blocks: i got a block for the chipset on my P6T -- do i need others? or, will the airflow through the case fans be enough to purge the heat from the other devices??

PSU: i currently have a 1200W -- anyone think this *wont* be enough??

fans: a little after the fact i know (and actually, i just thought of it lol), but how do i hook up all the fans this thing will end up having ?!?!

anyway -- sorry for the long post and all the (stupid?) questions. in case you couldn't already tell, i'm pretty much a noob to all this. i've done quite a lot of research and understand fairly well how all the technology and what-not works, and how water cooling in general works -- i just don't have any "hands-on" experience. thanks in advance for your words of wisdom/assistance!!

after doing some research i can conclude the following:

- three double rads dissipate 1000+W of total thermal energy (give or take)
- the boreas unit dissipates about 500W
- total heat output of OC'ed i7-965+2xGTX285<1000W(?)

with this in mind, i should have plenty of cooling power for a decent OC and stable temps near room temp.

question: since my plan is to run all this in a single loop, i would like opinions on why this is a good or bad idea. my reason is simple: i want to keep temps above room temp and i think the rads will keep the temps slightly above room temp so there wont be any condensation.

question 2: has anyone ever thought about reversing a single TEC to keep from going below room temp? is this a completely stupid idea or feasible?

thoughts/ideas??

As long as you have radiators in the loop your temperatures will not drop below ambient… Also your 1200 watt PSU is more than enough to power your system… I used a 1000 watt to run an i7 @ 4.2 GHz w/ 3 8800 Ultras, and 4 Freezone Units… Your PSU’s run best at about 75%.... Also whatever you do – don’t flip you TEC’s to try and warm things up… Use your MTEC controller.

I think you’re really going to enjoy your new system, and it sounds like it’s going to be a really nice build... Take your time and post lots of pictures of your progress – we all love pictures… I can’t wait to see how this turns out...

thanks for the reply!!

after looking at some of the custom builds around the website i have to say: i was pretty much in AWE!! wow, i had no idea you could do that much lol. mine will be a basic build - i'm more in it for the performance, but i do plan on having a clean build. i think i worked out (in my head at least) how i want the rads to line up. i think i will try to put all three of them in the lower part of the case with the PSU. you could actually fit 2 side-by-side and i will make a "copper sandwich" with 6 fans and 2 rads which i will completely seal for a tunnel effect (similar to the way the boreas is configured). i have a few ideas, but nothing as radical as what i have seen around the web. ill make sure to take pics once i get started and after everything arrives (that volcano in iceland sure picked a lousy time to go haywire!!! Frankfort airport has been shut down for several days and just recently opened again - im hoping my stuff will come in next week -- maybe even late this week)

wish me luck!!

well, everything finally came in. unfortunately, work has been crazy!! ive starting laying everything out and taking the "pre" photos with everything laid out on the floor. once i get some free time, it will come together pretty quick i think. i will be able to fit all three rads in the bottom compartment with the PSU, but things are pretty packed. all in all, i think it should still be pretty clean. ill keep you posted as i complete the project.

well, i hit a couple snags:

1. the koolance GPU block didn't fit my card. not sure if the wrong one was sent, but it turned out to be a blessing because they had replenished their HeatKiller blocks so i got a second one of those on the way (now i will have 2, and the one i have fits my card perfectly)

received correct (2nd) GPU block

2. changed my mind on the CPU block after reading a few more reviews and went with the HeatKiller 3 block. (should come in at the same time as the GPU block - and now i will have HeatKiller all the way around) (luckily, Performance PC's let me RMA both the koolance block and the previous -unopened- CPU block...with a 20% "restocking fee" of course)

received new CPU block

3. realized that putting 1/4" tubing on all the 3/8" fittings was NOT going to be fun, so i "reordered" 6' of 3/8" Swiftech Norprene (since CoolIT only has the 1/4" which i bought initially) note: the reason i bought 3/8" fittings was because NOTHING came with 1/4" - my only options were 3/8 and 1/2 ID fittings. now i just have to figure out how to make sure the 3/8" hose on the 1/4" TEC/pump fittings don't leak. (should also come in with the other 2 items - hopefully)

awaiting new tubing (1-2 days)

4. boreas pump cable seems to be the wrong cable (not sure how that happened) - for more info see separate thread.

still need help - PLEASE HELP

5. the 3rd radiater that i was "sure" would fit in the bottom of the Silverstone case - didn't. well, actually it did...or would...but i just can't get it "IN!!" (boy, that sure sounded different in my head) it won't fit through the opening and to add insult to injury, i can't put it on the top like i thought i could either. the motherboard heatsinks/components are in the way (grrr). i guess for now i will stay with just the 2 radiaters (6 fans) and the Boreas unit - which should still be more than enough to do what i want?? (4.3 GHz CPU and 2x800 MHz GPU's) - if i want/need, i guess i could always get an adapter and hang it off the back...

going with 2 rads for now. if not sufficient, will go back to drawing board

more to follow...
