One or two Boreas? ... (and other questions) 1 Year, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi, this is my first post here and I have some questions about my new water-cooling project with Boreas units. I’m wanted to hear your comments, advices and thoughts about this project.

So let begins with a list of my equipment: Mobo: Asus P6T Deluxe V2; CPU: Intel i7 965 Extreme; RAM: DDR3 Corsair (3x2GB ), 2000MHz, 7-8-7-20; GPU: Nvidia GTX295; HDD: 4xWD1001FALS 1.0TB

Water-cooling elements: CPU block: HEATKILLER CPU Rev3.0 1366; GPU block: EK-FC295 GTX Acetal + Nickel; HDD: Koolance HD-50-L06 Single Hard Drive Hydra-Pak Liquid Cooling Block; Mosfet block 1: BP-WBPAMOS2-BK; Mosfet block 2: BP-WBPAMOS3-BK; Reservoir: 2 x XSPC Passive 250mm Reservoir; Cooling system: CoolIT BOREAS MTEC chiller unit (one unit for now, second one depending on your recommendations); Waiting for Chipset block: Bitspower BP-WBAIX58NS-BK BLACK FREEZER; Waiting for RAM block: CWCDHXTEC - Corsair Cooling Ice T30 sub-ambient cooling subsystem for Dominator GT

Here I want to do a little stop and say that I know some of you think that liquid-cooling RAM, HDD and maybe also the chipsets is something worthless and expensive. But I’m looking not just for technical efficiency but also for a beauty machine full of cool stuff and built with my own hands (I will design and build also the case), so…. I will include them anyway.

The cooling circuits I’ve in mind are two (each with one BOREAS unit):

A )

B )

I plan to use 3/8” ID tubing for the two circuits, with exception of the HDD circuit which will have a “fitting” adapter with an inlet of 3/8” ID and four 1/4" ID outlets going parallel to each of my 4 HDD and then going out through four returning 1/4" tubing to another “fitting” adapter equal to the one in the beginning of the circuit.

Now, my questions:

  • I’ve read in several forums that the BOREAS unit can manage the CPU and GPU without any problem. But, can one BOREAS unit handle both the circuits described above? Or I would need two units to manage the load as I pictured in the images?

  • Does the 3/8” ID tubing affects (and how) the cooling performance?

  • Based on the measurements I explained above of the tubing for the watercooling of the HDD circuit, which of the following is more efficient for the HDD’s and the entire circuit (B ) : 1) Having parallel pipes for the 4 HDD’s or 2) Having serial feeding for cooling the 4 HDD’s?

  • Thanks

I think a Boreas would be an overkill to the 2nd loop. A freezone Elite Can handle the load for sure.....

Please correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks XenoMorph, I will consider this option.

Now the question is: What about the two loops with just one Boreas?

    Hi AntonioIon,

Nice diagram. The Boreas would be overkill to include in your second loop; passive air cooling would be enough. Try and create these loops without a reservoir. You would have to use the reservoir to fill up the loop but you could probably get away with finishing them off and bleeding air out of the system through the pump. If you want to include two Boreas’ then have the GPU in one loop and the CPU in the other loop.
